Montrealer Wannabes
Glad to see that the Vancouver-ites who destroyed their fair city, under the guise of their hockey team losing, are giving their city an international reputation as bad losers. At the end of it all folks, it’s just a hockey game, and everyone should take a Valium and chill out. Yes, it is disappointing, but if this is the worst thing to happen to you this year, your life is going pretty darn well. Grow up, and realize that while there are disappointments in life, it does not give you carte blanche to be an idiot. I don’t get this constant need to show your displeasure with life’s issues by destroying a business, or vandalizing property? I note the Miami Heat fans had a few mojitas and called it a night when they lost.
The Tories started their Stop Harper reign this week by declaring that Air Canada is an essential service and they are thinking of doing this for Canada Post as well. Does seem to make a mockery of the collective bargaining system, but I am a bit of a pinko, leftist, unionist at heart (except if it means I have to pay higher taxes), punch that into your calculator and see what answer you get! Jim Flaherty went to the states and lectured them about how they should get their deficit reduction plans in place, careful Jim, they might cut some things you don’t want them to cut. That is sort of like me suggesting to my wife how she might make her wardrobe look better, a very dangerous suggestion.
I have introduced some software to speed up the display of this site, please comment if you notice a marked speed improvement (or any issues that might arise because of it too), in my comments section.
I was all over the place this week, including two posts about job hunting. It’s not regular that I go off topic that badly twice in one week, but I felt I had to get those articles off my chest (and I couldn’t think of much else to write either):
- I started the week off with a new idea the Sunday Retreads post where I will be posting some of my favorite older posts.
- With May 2011: Better Employment Numbers in Canada I pointed out that while the job picture is looking better these days, it is still pretty darn bleak for new grads, these days.
- I have been sitting on Cheque writing to the Extreme for a while, just because it does sound kind of whiny, but from the response I guess it wasn’t as bad as I thought.
- With John Hunting Hints: Dress for a Job Fair which was really a blatant rip off 6 tips for Working a Career Fair, I lamented yet again about how some folks think these events are an excuse to dress like a slob and have an air of arrogance that maybe they shouldn’t have.
- I continued on my Job Hunting jag with The 1 Things That Helped Me Get a Job where I pointed out that networking is the best way to get a job, which provoked a response from someone at a Resume Writing service, read my reply, it is pretty pithy.
- Random Thoughts: Sexting with Attachments is a recap of the best from last week.
I actually enjoy all comments (even the ones that question my sanity), and will try to respond to most comments, so please feel free to comment away. For you spammers who continue to inundate me with your drivel, keep it up as well.
Other financial bloggers stayed more tightly on topic and gave us some more on topic commentaries this week:
- Michael James has a good point with Hockey lessons that don’t carry over to Personal Finance, winning a hockey game by 10 or 1 is just a win, but your stock growing by 100% instead of 10% is a different kettle of fish.
- The Canadian Couch Potato brings us a book review with The House That Bogle Built about the founder of Vanguard Funds, which is topical given the next point.
- Canadian Capitalist suggests we take a peek at Vanguard’s Australian ETFs if we want to get a feel for what they might sell in Canada.
- Larry MacDonald gives us One good reason to stay bullish on stocks, but my only question is, why only 1 Larry? Why? In Larry’s defense he is pushing one specific data point on this (I’m sure there are many other reasons).
- Preet points out in the Globe and Mail that There is no free-lunch investment seminar, which is true of most free lunch scams, there are no free lunches at the end of it all.
- Our Friend Jim Yih makes an important point with Enduring Power of Attorney Helps Others Make Financial Decisions When You Can’t, which is important (as we all age).
Carnivals this Week
I also had some submissions accepted to various carnivals, so go have a read of these as well:
- Tom over at Canadian Finance Blog hosted The Canadian Finance Carnival #40 which included my post Budget 2011: Redux
Remember
“When the fabric of society is so rigid that it cannot change quickly enough, adjustments are achieved by social unrest and revolutions.
Author: John Boyd Orr(must be one of those irate Canucks fans)
thanks for mentioning the post on investing vs paying off debt!
Those Vancouver idiots…they just make our country look bad. It makes me ashamed to be a Canadian. Like you say it is just a hockey game- take the loss with class.
The hooligans and those who enabled them (or cheered them on) are pathetic. What a sorry excuse to riot.
I trust you are not suggesting there are good reasons to riot? I suppose there are some, just they don’t leap to mind right now.
Thanks for the mention! I think it is a bit unfair to call Vancouver sore losers. The losers who trashed the city would have done it which ever way the game ended. I hope they all get rounded up and are prosecuted to the fullest extent.
Agreed, I was speaking more specifically to the “Wastes of Skin” (how does that phrase get pluralized?) that was taking advantage of the situation to cause mayhem.
I’ve heard people calling the rioters in Vancouver “anarchists”. That gives them too much credit in my estimation. How about just “idiots”? Thanks for the mention.
