Does Education Need to Change?

What will education be like in the future? I have no idea, but this talk from Ted.com (by Sir Ken Robinson) dares to say, what education should change, given the changes in the world, but we need to think about this and very soon.

I have dealt with schools in many ways in my lifetime, first as a student, and I didn’t really like school, but I was OK at it, so I thrived (in my own odd way). I also experienced the system by seeing what my Mother endured as a teacher (her successes, her joy, but also the pain she went through with how the system worked). I learned more about education when I went to University, and now I have learned a great deal about how education seems to work, as a business, while helping shepherd my children through their education.

In conclusion, schools stifle creativity, which agrees with the speaker’s premise. Schools work for 80% of students but the top 10% and the bottom 10% are stifled or lost in the shuffle.

This video says the Education system is crushing creativity, and I agree wholeheartedly, and I hope one day it does not.

Sir Ken Robinson makes an entertaining and profoundly moving case for creating an education system that nurtures (rather than undermines) creativity.

  1. Very interesting video. I agree wholeheartedly with the speaker. I teach economics and I think the curriculum is set up to prepare students to become PhD economists. As a result it is filled with a lot of mathematics and students come away with little grasp of the important concepts.
One of my most favorite classes to teach was “Economics for Non-Majors”.
